Some Poets, Artists and 'A Reference for Mellors'

Anthony Powel

Some Poets, Artists and 'A Reference for Mellors' - Anthony Powel

Some Poets, Artists & ‘A Reference for Mellors’ is Anthony Powell’s long-awaited collection of criticism on poets and artists. Drawn from over four decades of regular reviews and other critical writing, this volume shows Powell at his most incisive and beguiling. The collection closes with ‘A Reference for Mellors’, which will delight a new generation hitherto unacquainted with this gem of a parody.

Anthony Dymoke Powell was born in 1905. He was educated at Eton and Balliol College, Oxford, where he numbered Henry Green, Evelyn Waugh and Graham Greene among his contemporaries.

After coming down from Oxford, he worked in publishing, for Duckworth & Co., and as a scriptwriter. In the mid-1930s he began a career as a full-time writer, becoming a regular contributor to the Daily Telegraph and the Spectator.

During the Second World War, he served in the Intelligence Corps as a liasion officer with the Allied Forces in exile. In the late-1940s, he joined the editorial staff of the Times Literary Supplement and subsequently became the literary editor of Punch.

He was appointed a Companion of Honour in 1988. In addition to the duodecalogy, A Dance to the Music of Time, he is the author of seven other novels and four volumes of memoirs, To Keep the Ball Rolling.

Anthony Powell died in 2000.
